Question

I've paid off my mortgage. When do I receive my deed in the mail?

Answer

When you pay off a mortgage, either through refinancing or paying off your home, the bank records a document, called a "release of mortgage," reflecting that milestone.

Many homeowners contact our office asking for a copy of their deed upon paying off their mortgage when the release of mortgage is the document they actually want. Most property owners probably already have a copy of their deed. In the vast majority of cases, the banks direct (through instructions printed on the document) that the original of that release of mortgage be returned to the financial institution. Only in a small percentage of cases do banks direct that the document proving that the mortgage has been satisfied be returned to the person who paid it off. In any case, you can obtain a copy of your release of mortgage (identical to the original document) from the Greene County Recorder's Office. Copies are $1 per page and most releases are one page in length.
