Prison Rape Elimination Act

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed in 2003 with unanimous support from both parties in Congress. The purpose of the act was to “provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from prison rape.” (Prison Rape Elimination Act, 2003)

Policy

It is the policy of Greene County Community Corrections (GCCC) to provide a safe, humane and secure environment free from threat of sexual abuse or harassment for all participants in custody by maintaining a program of prevention, detection, response, investigation and tracking of all alleged sexual abuse and harassment. Greene County Community Corrections has a zero tolerance policy for incidences of sexual abuse or sexual harassment within its facilities. There is no consensual sex in a custodial or supervisory relationship. Any sexual assault or sexual contact/harassment between employees and inmates is inconsistent with the professional, ethical principles and policies of the GCCC.

In cases where sexual abuse or harassment has been alleged, a thorough investigation shall be conducted. In those cases where it appears that inappropriate sexual conduct has taken place, prompt intervention shall be provided and all appropriate disciplinary actions shall be taken, including the possibility of criminal prosecution.

The policy extends protection to all participants and staff who report sexual abuse or sexual harassment or cooperate with sexual abuse or sexual harassment investigations against retaliation by other participants or staff.

Reporting Sexual abuse/ harassment

You may report suspected sexual abuse/harassment on behalf of a GCCC work release facility resident by calling 812-384-0300 and asking to speak to the PREA Coordinator or by filling out the PREA tip form.
